How do you eventually coordinate breast feeding twins when you begin feeding on-demand?
I’m expecting twins, who will be here next week! (Schedule C-section) I am trying to get ready for the challenges of breast feeding and have been reading A LOT. The advice across the board is:
- Begin feeding separately until you are comfortable and at least one of the babies is great at latching.
- Feed “on-demand”, respecting the babies cues, especially when they are new-born.
- Eventually, feed them simultaneously, to save time.
What I am wondering is: How do I start to coordinate the babies feedings, to feed them simultaneously, if I am feeding based on the babies cues, rather than strictly following the every 2hr rule. I cannot seem to find any information on going from on-demand separate feedings, to simultaneous-scheduled feedings. Will I, at some point, wake up a sleeping baby to eat at the same time that his brother is hungry? This is very confusing to me!
It sounds like you have come across some good information to help you successfully breastfeed your twins. There are no hard and fast rules to how you decide to coordinate your babies’ feeds. At some point you will most likely find that your twins do wake at the same time as one will tend to disturb the other. At other times you could put the still sleeping baby to breast when you’re feeding his brother because a baby can often be persuaded to latch on and have a feed even without waking fully.
