Lice and breastfeeding

Daland 4 Rep.

So I just found out I got headlice from my younger child and in a panic I used head lice shampoo (smelled terrible) how long before this leaves my body …im currently breastfeeding my baby and don’t want to feed him that stuff but how long does it stay on the body or does it pass through the milk?

    Hi there,

If you can find the active ingredient in the head lice treatment you can check its compatibility with breastfeeding in places like the specialist pharmacy service (UK), lactmed and e-lactancia.

And this information sheet from the Breastfeeding Network may be helpful, it states that

Absorption of the products through the skin in sufficient quantities to affect breastmilk is unlikely. If a lactating mother has to treat several children’s heads it may be sensible to use rubber gloves to protect her hands and ensure the room is well ventilated.

Wet combing headlice with a nit comb when the hair is full of conditioner is a great way to deal with headlice without pesticides.
