Vasospasm pain

My daughter is 4 weeks old today. After struggling the first week we had a couple of good weeks breastfeeding, but for the last week or so I’ve been experiencing a lot of pain straight after feeds, mainly in my right breast but also in the left.

Both nipples turn white and become very sensitive. I also get shooting pains out from the nipples into the rest of the breast. Like I say this is worse on the right side, where the shooting pains extend into the armpit. It’s worse in the evenings if I get a bit cold.

I saw a breastfeeding adviser at the weekend who advised me on adjusting my position but even when the latch looks perfect and the actual feed is painless my nipple still ends up looking misshapen after the feed and I get the pain. It’s excruciating – what else can I try?

Hi there it is really difficult to solve something like this without taking a full history, watching a breastfeed and checking baby’s anatomy and tongue function. However the following articles may be helpful or contact an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant if you haven’t already.
