The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night Paperback – 28 Mar. 2002
Purchase options and add-ons
A breakthrough approach for a good night's sleep--with no tears
There are two schools of thought for encouraging babies to sleep through the night: the hotly debated Ferber technique of letting the baby "cry it out," or the grin-and-bear-it solution of getting up from dusk to dawn as often as necessary. If you don't believe in letting your baby cry it out, but desperately want to sleep, there is now a third option, presented in Elizabeth Pantley's sanity-saving book The No-Cry Sleep Solution.
Pantley's successful solution has been tested and proven effective by scores of mothers and their babies from across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Based on her research, Pantley's guide provides you with effective strategies to overcoming naptime and nighttime problems. The No-Cry Sleep Solution offers clearly explained, step-by-step ideas that steer your little ones toward a good night's sleep--all with no crying.
Tips from The No-Cry Sleep Solution:
- Uncover the stumbling blocks that prevent baby from sleeping through the night
- Determine--and work with--baby's biological sleep rhythms
- Create a customized, step-by-step plan to get baby to sleep through the night
- Use the Persistent Gentle Removal System to teach baby to fall asleep without breast-feeding, bottlefeeding, or using a pacifier

Pantley is like a best friend who's been there and is full of caring advice to help you and your baby get a good night's sleep. Her ten-step will lead you through the process one day at a time by:

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 February 2010Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIf you're reading this, you're probably extremely tired, so I'll try to cut to the chase!
1. The title is a misnomer - it should be "No Cry sleep solutionS". You pick from about 50 different ideas, each tailored for different situations and put a plan together that suits your baby and your parenting style. There are ideas for co-cleepers and for cot-sleepers. Ideas for bottle feeders and ideas for breast feeders. Ideas for dummy users, car-seat sleepers, older babies and new borns. It's really individualised.
2. Pantley herself co-slept and breast-fed BUT, unlike almost any other parenting book out there, she not only respects other parenting choices, she provides solutions that will suit the bottle-fed, cot-sleeping baby etc. She is never judgemental, never tells you you have only yourself to blame for your child's sleeplessness and never tells you what to do. I'd read these books even if they didn't work because she's so encouraging! So refreshing not to feel you've been beaten over the head with a stick!
3. She had 4 kids and worked with loads of test families. I only have 1 but she has had 3 periods of poor sleep, 2 after developmental leaps and 1 after 9 days illness. Each time, we've tailored a slightly different plan using this book and the nap book. We've seen about 30-50% improvement immediately which has given us energy to hang on 6-10 more days for a real turnaround. It's not as quick as controlled -crying but it's far less painful. No tears for Mum and Dad and you can look your child in the eye in the morning.
4. This really is a third way - I actually can't contemplate controlled crying but some Attachment Parenting books seem to suggest you leap joyfully out of bed 8 times a night in sheer delight at meeting your child's needs night or day. I'm not going to force my baby to work out how to sleep on her own and if she needs me, she gets me, but if I can gently lead her towards a full night's sleep without tears, it means I can function much better and be the kind of creative, fun, loving Mum I want to be during daylight hours rather than the grouchy wreck I was who was, snappy with everyone, especially those I loved most, and a menace behind the wheel of my car!!!!
I really wish you joy with your baby and I wholeheartedly believe this book will help you experience much more of that.
Just a final note, I thought the nap book would be a rewrite of this one but we have both and it really does have enough new information in it to be worth getting if naps are also an issue.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 December 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI must admit that it did not make any diffencence on my baby sleeping habits. She was 8-9 months old when I started reading it and it was difficult to get out of the habits we had.
The methods used as very gentle and take time and patience. There are no quick solution, but your baby doesn't need to cry and is not distressed at any point (crying babies to sleep is not natural or beneficial in the long term in my opinion)
However, it made me realise that there are more people out there with the same "problem" and that it is okay to co-sleep and breastfeed your baby to sleep if it works for you.
The book is easy to read (the writer is an experienced mum, not an overqualified proffesor...) and makes you feel content with yourself (no guilt or "I'm doing everything wrong" feeling)
In my experience, your baby will sleep through the night when he/she is ready. Some babies do it when they are 6 months old and others when they are 3 years old.
You will sleep again some time, but your baby will only be a baby now. Enjoy him/her
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 May 2013Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI was surprised and overwhelmed by how many different opinions I had thrown at me by so many different people on the subject of my baby! I found I was bombarded and became confused very quickly. I disagreed with many opinions and felt they went against my instincts. I stumbled across this book by chance and am so pleased I bought it even though I have been criticised by several people for doing so! After all, why do you need a book when you have so many people around you to "help" (each offering a different opinion)? And why do you need to find a no-cry sleep solution? There's nothing wrong with letting baby cry a little - or a lot as was the case for us!
We haven't finished reading this book yet but in the first few pages the author reassures you that you are not alone in these experiences and emotions and that there are NOT only two methods, "cry it out" or "live with it". The author suggests you create sleep logs to identify your baby's sleep patterns; this task alone helped us identify some things we hadn't ever noticed. There are so many little bits of information that we found so useful, like studies that have been carried out, how much sleep your baby should be getting in 24 hours and the patterns of light and deep sleeps etc. There are of course also bits that we didn't find so useful and didn't want to follow, but the author makes it clear that there is no one way of doing things and that you must choose what is best for you and your baby, which is exactly what we have done. We may not have followed to the letter but we now have a much more informed opinion when it comes to all those suggestions from well-intentioned people and our baby boy is a very happy and contented child who knows his parents love him dearly.
**UPDATE**
14 August 2016
I never finished this book and probably only managed to get a third of the way through. Nonetheless, it helped me tremendously on the subject of my baby's sleep. I didn't agree with everything I read but that helped me all the more to realise I actually had an opinion of my own. The book served a very good purpose for me in reassuring me that no matter what we chose for our child it would be right for us, and further reinforced my feeling that we couldn't go far wrong because, as loving parents who have looked into this matter considerably with great interest and consideration, we have only the very best in mind when considering our child's welfare.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Book Must buy (Content wise)...but check out the book quality and seller...
Condition of the Book: The book is not new. It pages have a yellowish ting which comes in old books. It has some pencil markings on the pages.
Content in the Book: The literature in the book is good and very effective my one year old slept very little but after reading and using the book and its practices he has started sleeping 10-11 hours at night with 1-2 wake-ups only. Would highly recommend this book to help you and your child sleep better and feel good. It helps you understand the reason why a child may be unable to sleep and how we can improve this. Great Book...Must buy for all parents whose kids wake up many times through the night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent so far (plus an update in 2013)
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseMy baby is only 2 1/2 weeks old, but I like what I've read so far and I'm excited to try out the tips for sleeping through the night ... just not yet ... my baby is too young and needs to eat every 2 hours or more at the moment. I'm happy with getting up at night to meet her needs at the moment .... I'm enjoying this time with her. One thing that has helped so far is following the advice for getting her to sleep on her own without the need for her to be in my arms or at the breast in order to fall asleep. So YAY, that tip has worked! I can't believe she can stay in her own crib and fall asleep on her own sometimes (sometimes I just like to snuggle her until she falls asleep).
UPDATE .....
My child is now 2 years old, and WOW, was this book ever helpful!!! I followed the advice according to how I felt it was best for my child, and my child started sleeping through the night as soon as she turned 4 months old. She has NEVER gotten up crying in the night since then (and not even for a feeding)!!!! She has a routine we follow for bed time and she LOVES it!!! She never complains about going to bed, and she never cries going to bed ... she enjoys her bedtime routine so much that she looks forward to going to bed! She goes to sleep without us in her room and wakes up talking and singing in the morning (and not too early either). Are we just fortunate to have such a wonderful child, or did the advice in this book really help? Well, we believe the advice in this book helped us immensely! We give our daughter love and respect, and she responds well to that. I definitely recommend this book to any parent!! It's better to read it at the beginning (i.e. before your child is born) so you are ready to respond to new situations before they get out of control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for new parents
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseVery refreashing reading after all the books which preach with very rigid style of parenting, this one gave me the feeling of being a human and a parent. Idea of following what feels right for you and your baby is so reassuring and natural. We need to trust our instinct more than some experts who are forgetting that baby is a little person not a dog to be trained. Crying is always bad, whether controlled or not. We want to raise our child to feel that he can trust his parents and to be confident that we will be there for him when he needs us. It can be sometimes difficult without a proper sleep, but babies are small for a very short time, and trust and love that are given to him from the first day of his life will last forever.
