Hold Your Prem Paperback – 10 Feb. 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

This is a workbook on skin-to-skin contact (kangaroo care) for parents of premature babies. On the mother's chest the newborn baby feels safe and therefore stabilises more quickly. The physical and mental development is better, and the social and emotional attachment improves early parenting. This book explains the medical terms and technology in everyday language to empower parents to get involved in the practical care of their premature infant. It explains the neuroscience of how a baby's brain develops. Other content covers parental emotions, early breastfeeding and developmental care. At the same time it gives nursing and neonatal staff recent research findings for evidence-based practice.

I LOVED this book. Our daughter was premature & in the SCBU for 6 weeks after birth. I wish I had known about this book then, it would have reassured & empowered me to have taken a more active role in her care, know what questions to ask & what actions to insist on.
The tone is very gentle & supportive.
    Can't recommend highly enough.

This book was an ultimate eye-opener. You have no clue what it's like to have a premature baby, how
utterly needy they are, until you either have one yourself, or you read this very fine workbook.
Can you imagine not even having your lungs developed enough to breathe? What must it be like
to have eyes and ears so sensitive to light and sound that those things HURT--if you are autistic, you
probably know that one. Know that mom's heartbeat and skin-to-skin stabilize your prem's system
almost as well as your womb? What a saving grace....
