Handy device to relieve engorgement or catch milk leakage

Handy device to relieve engorgement or catch milk leakage
I first came across this gadget in a breastfeeding Facebook group. Haakaa is a New Zealand brand. I ended up buying it on the Amazon US site at the time via seller Think Green (Haakaa authorised seller) but I'm glad it's now available on the UK site :) This device looks so simple yet so clever! It's portable (approx 14cm tall, bulb 5cm wide and flange 8cm diameter), doesn't need batteries, doesn't make noise and it's easy to clean/sterilise! You position the flange on your breast and squeeze the bulb before cupping it onto the breast. Don't squeeze too hard or else the strong suction will make your breast hurts. You may need several adjustments to get the positioning and level of suction right, but you'll get there with more practice. I find I only need a small level of suction but bear in mind it will be different for everyone! Massaging the breast before use may also help to initiate the let down. I never got much from expressing. I have used an Avent electric pump and only got a total of 4oz from both breasts after 30mins on EACH side. With the haakaa, I attach it whilst baby feeds off the other side so without much effort I get 1oz per session. This is the let down milk which is more watery and rich in carbohydrates so be aware that it's not as fatty as 'hind' milk so I don't use it as a full feed nor freeze it; I just add it to solid food for my baby (9 months old) instead of using cow's milk. This may not be good for those who has an over-supply because it may exacerbate the problem. In effect this is similar to breast shells. I've used the Avent breast shells to collect leakages before. Because the shells are worn in the bra, it's not particularly comfortable especially with engorged breasts, and it's prone to spills. I find the Haakaa is mostly hands free because my letdown is only 1oz or so but if you're lucky to collect much more breastmilk, I suspect it could get heavy and may need some hand support or suction may tail off at some point. Beware older babies may try to play with it, potentially knocking it over and spilling your precious liquid gold! There are markings on the pump (1-4oz and 10-100ml) however they are not really accurate. You will see the graduations spaced equally but as the bulb is round in shape there's no way each oz mark is equal in volume! I used some tap water and measuring cylinder in experiment and found that the 1oz mark = 16ml; 2oz mark = 39ml; 3oz mark = 66ml; 4oz mark = 90ml. There are other markings which indicate it can be heated to 250degC, or freezable to -20degC, oven safe and dishwasher safe. The pump also has a lid (sold separately by Haakaa) which can be handy. I understand this should be available on Amazon uk soon. I'm aware there's many cheap fakes out there but I'm paying for this for the comfort that it meets Uk safety standards and I know it's 100% food grade silicone. Chemicals in fakes can leak into the breastmilk causing harm to babies, or even cause chemical burns to the breast, so not a risk I'm prepared to take. The authentic Haakaa packaging is a thick sturdy cardboard cylinder. My Haakaa device weighs 73 grams on my digital scale. According to a post I saw on Haakaa Facebook, fakes often weigh much more (closer to 100 grams) due to thicker silicone.

I don't normally write reviews but this product is superb! I bought after seeing it recommended on a breastfeeding support post, thinking that for the money it would be worth a try. I have an incredibly large bust (K cup in nursing bras) and my main concern prior to purchase was how well the pump would stay on - especially when feeding a wriggly nearly 4 month boy. However after a couple of pumps to establish suction, the pump stayed on as advertised and I was able to fill it during a feed on the other side. It's incredibly soft and you really don't know that you have it on - and obviously it's silent!!

As other reviews have said the measurement gauge is a bit inaccurate but if you are using it as I am to capture let down and pump comfortably and conveniently whilst feeding, then I don't see this as a major downside as you will transfer it to another container to use anyway. I'm not sure if it will fully replace my electric medela pump as that does feel more efficient to me (I have a good supply so that makes pumping easy for me) but as a more natural feeling alternative which is no hassle to use in the slightest whilst feeding, I think it's a very worthwhile purchase. In all honesty, I wish I'd bought it sooner!!

I can't recommend this pump enough, it's brilliant and has changed my breastfeeding journey so much. I'm able to express four ounces in about fifteen minutes, which was unheard of me. Even though it says it's hands free, I'm terrified of it unsuctioning and spelling my liquid gold everywhere (I would cry) so I tend to use this while sitting down somewhere that I can quickly catch it if I need to. It has honestly been a godsend, I'm able to express once a day so my husband can give my baby a bottle at night and give me a few blesses hours to myself. It's super easy to clean too, I just soak it in hot water with some nuk baby bottle cleanser and put it in the microwave steriliser. If you're thinking about buying this, just do it! It's cheap and brilliant!

I was pleasantly surprised by this product. I don't have a big supply, and my letdown is not very strong, so I did not expect this item to work very well for me. But I have been very happy with it.
Now my baby is a bit bigger, I can put it on the other side when he is feeding and I can collect some extra milk. I also only have a single pump and if I put this on the other side then I can collect milk when both sides let down simultaneously. I have used it on its own and this has yielded some milk as well.
Sometimes it can be tricky to attach, and I have lost a whole session's worth a couple of times when it has popped itself off unexpectedly which is very disappointing (and messy). It also tips over easily, which again, has led to a loss of milk. But overall I would say that this product works and has helped to boost my supply.
I would warn users that the measurements down the side are incorrect and very misleading. This is rather disappointing.
It is a shame that I bought this product right as it launched in the UK, only for them to release the updated version a few weeks later.
(Beware the fakes btw. I believe this to be the genuine article)

Fabulous item! Easy to use, gentle, effective... What's not to love!?!

I am blessed with a VERY generous Milk supply and this has made those painful over engeorged early days much easier to manage second time around.

I have also always found breast pumps, both electric and manual, uncomfortable so have always hand expressed in the past. This device however is so gentle I have found it completely comfortable to use, even when boobs are swollen and sore when milk first comes in.

    ☆☆☆ Update ☆☆☆

Having said all this the lid, which you buy separately, is completely pointless.

In summary... buy the pump, you won't regret it; avoid the lid it's a waste of money.

I wanted to love the haaka pump. I really did. However, after several goes trying to stop it falling off my boob, I have to conclude it's never going to work for me.

The basic problem is that it won't stay on. I position it properly and start to feed from the other side, and within a minute or so it falls off. Regardless of how much suction I use (short of hurting myself), it falls off. Regardless of how I tweak the positioning so the nipple is centred or slightly off-centre, it falls off. Regardless of whether I'm leaning back or bolt upright (and I usually lean back on the sofa while feeding), it falls off. If I move at all (such as reaching for the tv remote), it falls off sooner.

It does collect milk if I hold it in place, and more than would passively drip into breast shells due to its active suction, so it gets a star for that. However, its active suction has a downside - my baby no longer gets a hit of milk soon after changing sides and so fusses with impatience and often pulls away (thus taking in less milk). And if I use it in my preferred feeding position of reclining slightly, the angle of the bulb part means the milk is liable to spill out after only half an ounce or so has been collected.

I have relatively small, firm boobs (b-cup while breastfeeding), so maybe that's why it won't stay put. I might try it again if I can engineer a way to hold it in place (such as the elastic-band-and-bra-tuck trick I do when using my Medela double pump). However, I'd be concerned it might spill anyway due to the angle of the bulb where the milk collects. For now, it's back to breast shells if I want to collect milk while feeding.
